A clean file reduces corrections, avoids errors and speeds up production preparation. Check these points before sending your DXF.

01

1. Work at 1:1 scale

A cutting file describes actual geometry: 500 mm must measure 500 units when working in millimetres. A print layout at 1:5 must not shrink the exported geometry.

Reopen the exported DXF and measure a known dimension. For example, check a plate’s 200 mm width rather than trusting its appearance on screen.

02

2. Check units

State “dimensions in mm” in the supplied documentation. Export and import settings must agree: confusing inches and millimetres introduces a factor of 25.4.

Clear filenames help tracking: plate-A_rev-B_steel-3mm.dxf. Still specify quantity and material grade in the request, even if the filename includes some details.

03

3. Remove duplicates

Part and hole contours should be closed, without overlapping segments or small gaps. Duplicate lines may be read as extra passes; gaps may prevent correct area recognition.

  • Zoom into corners and joints to inspect connections.
  • Remove isolated elements, duplicates and crossing contours.
  • Check that internal holes are separate from the outer contour.
04

4. Keep only useful geometry

Reserve cutting DXFs for the contours to manufacture. Put dimensions, tolerances, notes and explanatory views in a separate PDF. Clearly identify any marking or engraving and confirm how it will be handled.

Draw nominal dimensions: do not add kerf compensation without workshop agreement. This process-specific correction is handled during machine preparation.

05

5. Check small details

Small holes, tabs and slots need review against material and thickness. A shape visible in CAD may not be manufacturable to the required quality. Confirm critical details rather than applying a universal minimum size.

For cut-out lettering, add bridges holding the inner areas of letters such as A, O or R, or these pieces will fall out after cutting.

06

Before sending

  • One file per part reference, with an identifiable revision.
  • Required grade, thickness, quantity and finish.
  • A dimensioned drawing with functional dimensions and required tolerances.
  • For bent parts, attach finished-part views and have the flat pattern approved.
  • Reopen the exported DXF one last time to check dimensions and contours.
